PMH-BC – Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse - Board Certified
About PMH-BC Exam
The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Board Certification (PMH-BC) exam is offered through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). It is a certification specifically designed for registered nurses who provide mental health care. This credential validates a nurse’s expertise in assessing, diagnosing, planning, and implementing care for patients with psychiatric and mental health conditions. Achieving the PMH-BC certification demonstrates a nurse’s commitment to delivering safe and effective care, including managing psychiatric disorders, therapeutic interventions, and crisis management. This certification reflects a high standard of professional competence in mental health nursing and a dedication to supporting patients through evidence-based practices and comprehensive care strategies.
To be eligible for the PMH-BC exam, a registered nurse must hold a current, active RN license in a U.S. state or territory or the legally recognized equivalent in another country. They must also have practiced the equivalent of two years full-time as a registered nurse, completed at least 2,000 hours of clinical practice in psychiatric-mental health nursing within the last three years, and completed 30 hours of continuing education in psychiatric-mental health nursing during the same period. These requirements ensure candidates have adequate hands-on experience and educational preparation before pursuing certification.
